The heat equation is a PDE that describes how temperature changes over time in Euclidean space. On a manifold, we can also define the heat equation and express its solution as an integral operator with a smooth kernel, called the heat kernel. In this talk, we study the heat equation and its applications to the Lefschetz fixed point theorem and the Atiyah--Singer index theorem.
