Whittaker and Kirillov models are classical tools for explicitly studying smooth representations of p-adic groups. Starting from the q-expansion of modular forms, I will give a brief introduction to Whittaker and Kirillov models and then discuss how Whittaker objects appear in recent categorical approaches to the local Langlands program. If time permits, I will also discuss related questions in the categorical p-adic Langlands program.
