In this talk, we will review about several analytic, algebraic, and topological results on variation of Hodge structures and degenerations of Hodge structures starting from Griffiths, Schmid and Cattani-Kaplan-Schmid, which serve as very crucial inputs to Saito's theory on Hodge modules (and Mixed Hodge modules).
