Cortical networks utilize complex connectivity between single neurons as well as between populations of neurons to efficiently encode sensory inputs. I will introduce the unique structures of data-driven neuronal connectivity in the mammalian visual cortex and discuss how these structural patterns promote adaptable encoding of sensory information in the cortex. The first part of the talk will focus on the architectures of data-driven, anatomical and functional connectivity of the visual cortex. Specifically, I will discuss hierarchical organizations, modular structures, and functional low-order motifs in data-driven networks of the mouse visual cortex. If time allows, I will also discuss the computational implications of the characteristic network structures of the mammalian visual cortex.
